Intro

Matthew 5:14–16 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

"Mind the Light"

The other day I read the story, told by a brother minister, of the lighthouse keeper on Robbins' Reef off the rocky shore of New England. Jacob Walker, after years of faithful service of minding the light, caught a cold one stormy night and rapidly grew worse and died. His wife buried his body on the hillside above the shore, on the mainland, in plain view of the lighthouse upon the reef. Then she applied for and received the appointment as the keeper of the light. For twenty years she carried on alone, and then a New York City reporter went out to get her story. In the course of the interview she told him this: "Every evening I stand in the door of the lighthouse and look across the water to the hillside where my husband sleeps. . . . I always seem to hear his voice saying, as he often said when he was alive, 'Mind the light! Mind the light! Mind the light!'" Across the troubled waters and the crashing breakers of our time there comes another voice to us, a voice from that "green hill far away, without a city wall," a voice out of the blackness of earth's darkest day to us in the darkness and evil of our day. And the message of the Son of God is the same, "Mind the light! Mind the light! Mind the light!"
This cry rings with just as much efficacy. In light of all that’s happening in country and the world. As believers.
In light of BLM, this is NOT an attempt to mute you. To make you docile. To call off the dogs. This is an attempt to refocus you and deploy you on your assignment with today marking the second “shaper” as issued by Jesus. Last week…be salt. This week…be light.
Transition: And this is what Jesus calls us to have elements of.

Basic Observations

you can waste your life but your light will live eternally v. 13 “It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”
unlike salt you have to be lit. “nor do they light a lamp”
Jesus commands you to be both

The Light

vs. 14 “you are the light of the world”
observation: you have to be lit. you aren’t born lit.
Hint: it’s the Holy Spirit that lights you. I’m going to come back if you see the connection before i get back type “I’ve made the connecting”
vs. 14 “you are the phos”
phṓs light (source of) n. — any object that serves as a source of illumination.
different light have different purposes ex. bedroom, car light, office, batman light.”
app: i don’t know where God’s called you to shine; but i will tell you that your purpose is attached to the power of your light

The Lamp

you need some help catching on fire.
Historical Bkgrd of the latern
you need something that will keep the fire lit
Matthew 25:8–10 NKJV
8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
literary tool/method parallelism “Nor do they light a lamp.”-ESV NKJV “nor do people light a lamp”. It means you can better understand what’s over there if i lay out the point along side of what you already understand.
Genesis 1:26–27 NKJV
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

The Lampstand

Matthew 5:15 NKJV
15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Once you’ve been lit, there are 3 options you have to shine.
No Impact - under a mixing bowl
Low Impact - if it’s not on the lampstand it can still be in the house
Maximum Impact - as high up as designed to be simply being what it’s been lit
The difference between which you’ll be is YOU!!!!
Rom 12:1 “present your bodies a living sacrifice...” the problem is when the sacrifice is alive, it has tendencies to crawl off. This is why we’re told
Galatians 5:24 NKJV
24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
2 Choices
get what you want or what He wants
if it’s you - you’re acting like Lucifer it’s your choices that He wants He get’s the glory
vs. 24 “those who are Christ’s HAVE crucified”
logically question “when did you die?”
App: It’s what you want to do in your flesh that makes you come down from the place that He’ll get the Maximum glory!

The Power of Light

A modern scientific discovery is of thrilling interest. The so-called death ray with which the French army experimented consists of a light of tremendous candle-power, a beam of which striking the eye causes a temporary paralysis. Troops advancing would be mowed into unconsciousness, later to recover in captivity. What an illustration of the power of light! "Let there be light: and there was light." M. de Christmas, inventor of this ray, believes that cities can be protected by a curtain of light which airmen could not face. "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." What a symbol, this curtain of light, of the protecting care of God!
Not just high but on a candlestick
you have to make the choice to be put above where you’re burning.
michelle obama “when go low we go high”
tabernacle lampstand
This little light of mine, we grew up singing it but when we grew up, we didn’t change the song into His signature.
Signature: “that they may see your good works.”
How you shine determines if He gets glory!!
“your” - there’s only 1 light you’re responsible for.
Matthew 5:23 NKJV
23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
lámpō to shine (beam) v. — to emit light; be bright, as of the sun or a light.
measuring basket n. — a container of standard measurement, about eight U.S. dry quarts, used to obtain fixed amounts of a substance.
lampstand n. — a narrow, elevated support for holding a lamp.
In 1 scenario the light is low and covered.
If you just take off what’s covering people will see it BUT they have to look down.
If you put it where it’s supposed to be “high”
Nobody in their right mind lights a lamp, burns oil, and then covers it up.
You are taking 2 things away. 1) ability to see 2) any heat that it’d produce
covered
down low
up high
“light-bearers” You’re most like God when you’re shining.
1 John 1:5 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
Close but if you choose to put yourself up and stay up.

Clue 1: Lamps don’t light themselves. When the command to be salt in vs. 13 was issued, it was more of a revelation. But in vs. 14 the revelation “you are the light of the world” is followed by an explanation.
Matthew 5:14–15 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
it moves without you noticing it. you don’t know where it came from or where it’s heading to.
light is so effective until it’s never noticed until there’s too much of it or too little of it.
